Body
Objective: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association of pterygoid
plate asymmetry and temporomandibular jaw disorders.
Materials and methods: Cone beam CT images of 20 patients with unilateral temporomandibular
jaw disorders were analyzed. Three observers performed dimensional measurements of the
pterygoid plates.
Results: Significant differences appeared between dimensional measures of the pterygoid plates
on the site with reported TMJ pain and the contralateral one (p=0.00), with the painfree
site showing larger prteygoid plate dimensions. Intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated
for inter-examiner reliability, showing a very high ICC for all the examiners (0.99, 95% CI
0.98-0.99).
Conclusion: Within the limits of the present case series, CBCT pterygoid plates measurements
of the site with TMJ pain were found significantly smaller as compared to the site without
pain. Multicenter trials are needed to establish its true etiological effects and if that is shown,
find the best therapy for specific clinical conditions of temporomandibular disorders.
