Body
Objectives
To evaluate the possibility of application of the Cameriere method of dental age estimation in
the Polish population.
Materials and methods
Digital panoramic radiographs for the analysis were selected from database of patients referred
for X-ray examination due to clinical indications, presenting neither general development
impairments, nor dental anomalies. The final material consisted of 436 patients (225 males
and 211 females) aged 6 to 15 years. Dental age (DA) was estimated according to Cameriere
method based upon linear measurements of completeness of apical development. Agreement of
DA with chronological age (CA) was evaluated statistically.
Results
According to Cameriere method DA was higher than CA in 42% of females and 32% of males,
and lower than CA in 53% females and 65% males. Agreement between DA and CA was found
in only 4% of cases. There were introduced corrections in the original equation proposed by
Cameriere in order to adapt the method for use to the Polish population. The corrected formula
is as follows:
Age = 9.871 + 0.565*g + 0.589*N0 – 0.973*s – 0.221*s*N0,
where g is a variable equal to 1 for boys and 0 for girls, N0 is the number of teeth with root
development complete and s is the sum of the normalized open apices of seven left mandibular
teeth.
Conclusions
Agreement between DA estimated according to Cameriere and CA was overall poor. Application
of the corrected equation made the method more suitable for use in the Polish population.
