Body
Objective: To validate the accuracy of bone height and width measurements obtained with
single and stitched volumes of a cone beam computed tomography (cbct) system by comparing
them to direct digital caliper measurements.
Methods: Fiducial markers were placed on both lingual and buccal cortical plates of ten dry
mandibles to define different planes. Two different widths and two different heights on anterior
and posterior regions were measured on Kodak 9000 3D cbct images. Each mandible was
scanned 4 times - three for right, anterior, left single volumes and the fourth for the stitched
volume. Total of 480 measurements were made on forty volumes by 3 observers. Gold standard
was determined using caliper measurements. Comparison with the gold standard was done with
Bland and Altman plots. Experimental groups were compared using Dunnett test. Correlation
of measurements was assessed with Pearson’s correlation analysis.
Results: No differences were found in the height and width measurements between single and
stitched volumes for both anterior (pheight=0.95, pwidth=0.63) and posterior (pheight=0.86,
pwidth=0.67) measurements. The mean difference in width measurements was 0.99 mm for
single while it was 1.04 mm for stitched volumes. Mean difference in height measurements
were 0.97 mm and 1.07 mm for single and stitched volumes respectively. The correlation between
observers was 0.972 and 0.964 for posterior; 0.991 and 0.977 for anterior measurements
of single and stitched volumes respectively.
Conclusions: Measurements obtained on the stitched volumes of Kodak 9000 3D show a high
level of agreement with single volume measurements and actual anatomical distances.
