OBJECTIVES:To determine the diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) according to the imaging
system for obtaining a diagnostic image in the normal conditions of clinical practice in 2000
dental installations in Spain.
METHODS:A total of 1978 official reports on dental surgeries from 16 Spanish autonomous
regions compiled during 2009 on radiological standards. The variables analyzed are the mean
radiation dose according to the imaging system used for a periapical radiograph of the second
upper molar, second lower molar, upper incisor and lower incisor in each centre. The actual
mean radiation dose was determined using a UNFORS XI or PMX III detectors and occasionally
a thermoluminescence dosemeter.
RESULTS:The differences in the doses (DRLs) according to the imaging system used: 2.13 mGy
in installations using digital systems (n=1084) [1.9 mGy for Direct systems (DR (n=888): direct
digital images are acquired using a solid-state sensor. The solid-state sensors are based on
charge-coupled device complementary metal-oxide semiconductor- based chips); 3.2 mGy for
Indirect systems (CR (n=196): indirect images are obtained using a phosphor plate system)],
and 4.3 mGy in installations using radiographic films(n=894) [4.4 mGy(n=757) for installations
using Ultra-speed, 3.6 mGy (n=105) for installations using Insight, 4.3 mGy(n=21) for installations
using Insight and 3.8 mGy(n=11) for installations using AGFA-Dentus]. There was a
significant difference between the doses administered in digital systems and in systems using
radiographic film: DR
