PURPOSE:
To determine the appropriate flip angle and to investigate suitable food for use in MRI cine
acquisition using fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition (FIESTA) for evaluating
swallowing.
METHODS:
Eight healthy volunteers were enrolled in this study. Dynamic MRI cine acquisition using 2D
FIESTA in the midsagittal plane was performed for each volunteer, while changing the flip
angle from 10 degrees to 90 degrees. The signal intensities of the tongue, soft palate, and the
posterior wall of the pharynx were measured. Five kinds of foods (water, oil, water with contrast
medium, viscous orange juice, and agar jelly) were also scanned using the same procedure.
RESULTS:
One hundred images were acquired in 11 seconds, i.e. the frame rate was approximately 9.1.
The highest signal intensity of tissue was obtained at a 45 degrees flip angle for the tongue,
29 degrees for the soft palate, and 33 degrees for the posterior wall of the pharynx.
Among the tested foods, viscous orange juice and agar jelly showed good contrast with the
surrounding anatomical structures.
CONCLUSION:
The appropriate flip angle ranged from 30 degrees to 40 degrees, and viscous orange juice and
agar jelly were found to be suitable foods for FIESTA cine acquisition performed for evaluating
swallowing.
