Body
Objectives: Cone beam computed tomography is an invaluable tool in orthodontics. The whole
of the data set must be evaluated by an appropriately trained dentist or radiologist. The aim
of the study was to record any incidental findings in CBCT scans taken for orthodontic purposes
and to see if the findings would influence orthodontic treatment.
Methods: 329 consecutive scans carried out for orthodontic purposes using an i-CAT Classic
were included in the study. Each scan was evaluated by a single radiologist and any incidental
findings recorded. The incidental findings were further classified depending on whether the
finding would influence orthodontic management.
Results: There were a total of 352 incidental findings. The most common incidental findings
were dental (n=108) and included retained deciduous roots (n=24) and periapical disease
(n=15). The next most frequent finding was antral disease (n=105) with the majority of these
being thickening of the mucosa (n=68).
Of the incidental findings 198 were interesting but were of academic interest only. 152 findings
required follow-up, but the overall orthodontic treatment plan was not altered by the
finding. Only 2 findings were significant in that the orthodontic treatment was amended in
light of the incidental finding.
Conclusions: Incidental findings are common on CBCT. However the majority of these findings
do not affect orthodontic treatment planning.
