Body
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the type and number of incidental soft tissue
calcifications identified on CBCT examination of the head and neck.
Method: All CBCT scans performed in our institution between November 2009 – November 2011
(296) were reviewed for the presence of soft tissue calcifications. The calcifications included
were: acne; vascular; lymph node; pharyngeal tonsils; parotid and submandibular glands and
ducts; antroliths. The height of the scanned volume, age and sex of the patient were also
recorded.
Results: A total of 62/296 (21%) of CBCT scans showed some form of soft tissue calcification,
13/62 (21%) of these had two or more soft tissue calcifications. The most common were pharyngeal
calcifications (16%) followed by vascular calcifications (5%), acne (4%), parotid gland
(1%) salivary duct (1%), Antrolith (0.68%). No submandibular gland or nodal calcifications
were recorded. The height of the scanned volume ranged from 27-170mm, patient age ranged
from 7-84 (mean 39.7). 54% of patients were male and 46% female.
Conclusion: These figures highlight the importance of systematic examination of CBCT scans
to ensure that all areas are examined, not just the specific area of interest. Any other clinically
significant findings should also be included within reporting.
