Body
Objectives: Evaluation of the accuracy measuring bone thickness and of existence and completed
integration of augmentation material at dental implants.
Methods: In an animal experiment dog jaws with artificial defects treated with GTR-techniques
were exposed in CBCT (PaX Duo3D®, FoV 50x50 mm, Voxelsize 80 µm, 85 kV, 4,9 mA) and
investigated histologically. Bone thickness was measured and the existence and completion of
osseous integration was evaluated both in CBCT and in histological images.
Results (preliminary): The mean and the standard deviation of the differences between radiological
and histological measurements of peri-implant bone thickness were -0.22 mm and 0.78
mm respectively and without significance. Sensitivity and specificity were 0.77 and 0.60 for
the existence of BAM, 0.59 and 0.74 completion of osseous integration and 0.39 and 0.71 for
the completeness of bone covering of the implant surface.
Conclusion: The accuracy of peri-implant measurements seems limited by a high standard deviation.
To some extent it might be possible to evaluate the existence and integration of bone
augmentation material but not the completeness of bone covering the implant surface.
