Introduction and objective: Currently, craniofacial malformations and their associated disability
are areas that warrant further research, as they are beneficial to clinician’s and basic
researchers. The rarity of these groups poses a greater challenge. The pathogenesis of craniofacial
malformations is intriguing because they appear to arise from polygenic interactions
with environmental influences. The study aims to bridge the gap between genetic variations
of craniofacial malformations, Eustachian tube length, angulation and dentomaxillofacial
impairment.
In Crouzon syndrome, Craniosynostosis, Scaphocephaly, Mandibulo-facial dysostosis & Hemifacial
Microsomia.
Materials and Methods: The selected subjects were individually assessed based on Radiological
evaluation (Three dimensional computed tomography of the face). Eustachian tube dimensions,
dento-facial abnormalities were evaluated in the above cases & compared to the controls.
Results: The features of craniofacial skeleton i.e. anterior skull base, the angle between the
anterior skull and medial skull base, upper facial height and Eustachian tube parameters
influence the audiological and dentofacial apparatus. The degree of malformation affects the
magnitude of disability.
Conclusion: The Eustachian tube dimensions essentially the length of the bony part and angulation
in two planes is aberrant in cases of craniofacial malformations in addition to the facial
dimensions. This affects the conductive hearing loss due to frequent otitis media.
In the developing world, the cost of rehabilitation and problem of access puts treatment
beyond the reach of vast number of individuals. A coordinated approach aimed at the holistic
management of the incidence and pathogenesis of craniofacial malformations may hold the
answer to vital questions concerning disability.
