Body
Objective
Nowadays Cone Beam Computed Radiography systems are recognized as a perfect image
modality and have become the standard of care in dental practice. CBCT has advantages such
as submillimeter resolution, images of high diagnostic quality, short scanning times and low
radiation dosage compared to conventional CT scans. This article describes the information of
4181 cases referred to the oral & maxillofacial center during the past 2 years.
Methods
A retrospective study was made of sequential CBCT radiographic reports in a privative Oro Maxillofacial
Radiology center in Tehran (capital city of Iran) from March 2009 to December 2010
(n=4181).Descriptive statistics identified patient demographic data and the referral patterns.
Results
The mean age of reffered patients was 46 years and there was a predominance of women
(54%). General dentists (49%), Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons (24%) and periodontologist
(14%) made most patient referral. Most of the patients were referred for implant surgery (89%)
followed by imaging for Wisdom tooth (2.6%) and imaging for TMJ (2.5%).
Conclusion
There is no doubt that CBCT changes the way dentists approach many procedures. The number
of cases referred to our center in two years shows that Iranian general dentists & specialists
are aware of the advantages of this imaging modality. Our results also showed that most patients
are referred for implant surgery.
