Objective<br />

Nowadays Cone Beam Computed Radiography systems are recognized <strong>as</strong> a perfect image<br />

modality and have become the standard of care in dental practice. CBCT h<strong>as</strong> advantages such<br />

<strong>as</strong> submillimeter resolution, images of high diagnostic quality, short scanning times and low<br />

radiation dosage compared to conventional CT scans. This article describes the information of<br />

4181 c<strong>as</strong>es referred to the oral & maxillofacial center during the p<strong>as</strong>t 2 years.<br />

Methods<br />

A retrospective study w<strong>as</strong> made of sequential CBCT radiographic reports in a privative Oro Maxillofacial<br />

Radiology center in Tehran (capital city of Iran) from March 2009 to December 2010<br />

(n=4181).Descriptive statistics identified patient demographic data and the referral patterns.<br />

Results<br />

The mean age of reffered patients w<strong>as</strong> 46 years and t<strong>here</strong> w<strong>as</strong> a predominance of women<br />

(54%). General dentists (49%), Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons (24%) and periodontologist<br />

(14%) made most patient referral. Most of the patients were referred for implant surgery (89%)<br />

followed by imaging for Wisdom tooth (2.6%) and imaging for TMJ (2.5%).<br />

Conclusion<br />

T<strong>here</strong> is no doubt that CBCT changes the way dentists approach many procedures. The number<br />

of c<strong>as</strong>es referred to our center in two years shows that Iranian general dentists & specialists<br />

are aware of the advantages of this imaging modality. Our results also showed that most patients<br />

are referred for implant surgery.<br />
