Parents in general are concerned about their children's education.
Parents have a responsibility to support the school.
Parents can help teachers in understanding their children.
Cooperation between principals and parents is essential for positive home­
school relations.
Parents have a legal obligation to ensure that their children attend school.
Parents can share the management responsibilities of a school.
Parents have a right to know how their children are progressing.
Parents can offer disciplinary back-up.
Similarly, Kruger (1996:33) provides the following five points to explain the
rationale for parent participation:
(1) Parents are responsible in the law for their children's education.
(2) If most ofa child's education happens outside the school. especially in the
home, and if parents are educators of the child with teachers, then it seems
logical to make the two elements of school-learning and home-learning
compatible.
(3) Research indicates that family-based learning intluences the effectiveness
of SChool on a child.
