questionnaires, (for parents and principals respectively) constructed by the
researcher, as the data base. The information sought was not available from any
other source and had to be acquired directly from the respondents. When this
situation exists, the most appropriate source of data is the questionnaire, as it can
easily be adapted to a variety of situations.
With the aim of administering the questionnaires to parents and principals, it was
ftrst necessary to request permission from the Secretary of the KwaZulu-Natal
Department of Education and Culture. Once permission had been granted the
researcher made the necessary arrangements to administer the questionnaires to
parents and principals.
The aim of the questionnaires was to obtain information regarding parents and
principals as partners in creating a culture of learning. The questions were
formulated to establish whether parents and principals are working as partners in
creating a culture of learning with regard to the following:
the sharing of responsibility;
the sharing of information;
the sharing of decision-making;
the sharing of skills; and
the sharing of accountability.
7.2.6 Presentation and analysis of research data
The purpose of this chapter was to discuss the data collected from the
questionnaires completed by 200 parents and 50 principals and to offer comments
and interpretations on the ftndings. At the outset, an explanation and description
was provided as to the methods employed in the categorisation of the responses
and the analysis of the data. This was followed by the presentation and discussion
of the responses to the questions in the questionnaires.
