3.2.5 Challenges of parenthood
Parents remain the primary influence on the child's cognitive, conative, social,
affective, aesthetic, moral, religious and physical development towards realization
of the goal of becoming, which is adulthood (Van den Aardweg & Van den
Aardweg, 1988:60). The paramount challenge of parenthood is to adequately
provide for the needs of the child. The child's need for love, acceptance, security,
belonging, confidence, discipline, new experiences, praise and recognition and
responsibility have to be met by parents to ensure optimal becoming (Pringle,
1987:148-151).
