Development of large seeded chickpea lines resistant to Ascochyta blight<br />

With the aim of developing chickpea cultivars including blight resistance and large seeds a<br />

crossing program between 5 resistant advanced lines with medium-large seeds and different<br />

sources of resistance were initiated in year 2005. Those advanced lines were originally derived<br />

from crosses between resistant accessions from ICARDA and the Spanish large seeded (around<br />

0.50 g per seed) and susceptible local cultivar ‘Blanco Lechoso’. A F 2 population with a total of<br />

909 plants was obtained joining F 1 derived from all possible crosses between the 5 advanced<br />

lines. Early generation testing method of F 2-derived lines was employed for large seed selection<br />

until F 2:5 families. The best individuals from the best F 2:5 families were selected and advanced<br />

selecting for large seeds until F 5:8. Finally, in 2011/2012 agronomic season, 30 F 5:8 advances lines<br />

were sown following a randomized block design with two repetitions and parents as controls.<br />

Eleven lines with larger seed size than the best parent (0.44 g per seed) were selected (ranking<br />

from 0.49 g to 0.57 g per seed). These results suggest that transgressive segregation is present in<br />

chickpea for seed size. In order to test the presence of QTLs for ascochyta blight in the selected<br />

advance lines, allele-specific markers for QTL AR1 (CaETR) and QTL AR2 (SCY17 590) were<br />

employed. Both QTLs were present in all selected lines.<br />
