Selection and <strong>Training</strong> of Volunteers<br />
presented. Items may include, bicycle, knap sack and some medicines and supplies such as<br />
Paracetamol, Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS), treated bednets and Condoms.<br />
The presentation of the items to the volunteers is done using laid down procedures and<br />
according to the chain of command. First, the items are handed over to the chief who<br />
passes them on to the health committee. The health committee then presents them to the<br />
volunteer. The volunteer reports to the health committee which also reports to the chief.<br />
Since volunteers are accountable to the entire community they must gain the approval<br />
of a variety of people as shown in Figure.3.1.2. Participants are encouraged to discuss<br />
among themselves the processes for selecting and approving volunteers as pertains to their<br />
communities and share ideas.<br />

The Chief informs health committee about the need to appoint health volunteers<br />
The <strong>Health</strong> committee informs clan heads and other opinion leaders to pass on<br />
information by word of mouth to various households<br />
Those who are interested in the work give their names to the <strong>Health</strong> committee<br />
<strong>Health</strong> committee vets and shortlists qualified candidates<br />
The Chief and <strong>Health</strong> committee consult and agree on the most suitable candidate(s)<br />
The Candidates are presented to the community at a grand durbar for consideration<br />
If they are accepted their roles are spelt out to them<br />
The health authorities receive the list of candidates and arrange to train them<br />
After the training the volunteers are presented to the community at a grand durbar. The<br />
tools of their trade are presented to them according strict protocol. The items are given<br />
to the chief who in turn hands them over to the health committee who then present them<br />
to the volunteer. Items may include: bicycle, knap sack and some medicines and supplies<br />
