Home Visiting<br />
Introduction<br />
How many of you have children or relatives who have<br />
children? Were the children under five years visited at<br />
home by the <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Nurse or the ‘Khaki<br />
Nurses’? The visitation of homes by a <strong>Community</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong> Nurse to deliver health services is called home<br />
visiting. In your work as volunteers, you are also<br />
expected to carry out similar activities.<br />
Home Visiting<br />
One important work of the volunteer is to visit families<br />
and individuals in their homes to check up on their<br />
health. In this unit we will discuss the importance<br />
of home visits, the purpose of home visits, and the<br />
volunteer’s roles during home visits. We will also<br />
describe the tools or materials that you may use during<br />
home visits. Finally, we will discuss how you trace defaulters and make referrals to the CHO<br />
and other health facilities.<br />

Home visits are visits made to families and individuals by volunteers and CHOs as part of<br />
health service delivery at the community level. Home visits are of two main types – routine<br />
home visits and special home visits. Routine home visits are made as part of a volunteer’s<br />
regular job to visit homes for the purpose of promoting health. These kinds of visits may be<br />
planned to come on regularly, for instance once a week or every Thursday. Special home<br />
