The volunteers’ role in conflict management<br />

Please note that you are a volunteer for health even though you are a community member.<br />

You have a specific role of maintaining the peace and being the peace maker so that the aim<br />

of having healthy communities is achieved. The WHO definition for health states that:<br />

“<strong>Health</strong> is a state of complete physical, social, mental and spiritual well being not merely the<br />

absence of disease or infirmity.”<br />

I will also add even ‘economic and political’ well being to this definition. So you need to help<br />

people maintain the balance in all these factors to remain healthy. Happy and healthy people<br />

do not have time for conflicts; because they are at peace. How do you help people stay<br />

happy and healthy?<br />

Help people to be holistically healthy<br />

This means that you are not only there to see to the eradication of diseases, but to make sure<br />

that your communities are peaceful. This means that part of your volunteer work is helping<br />

people to be healthy by getting along with each other communities.<br />

When they are gainfully engaged or employed with personal and community focus, they are<br />

less likely to get into each other’s way and poke their nose into what is not their business.<br />

With money and work in people’s hands often come beautiful ideas.<br />

Let your reputation go before you<br />

Volunteerism requires discipline, integrity, good judgment and neutrality. This means that<br />

if you are involved in a conflict or called upon to arbitrate in one, your reputation should go<br />

ahead of you even before you start to apply an intervention.<br />
