Sir Anthony Kenny indica<strong>te</strong>s in The God of the philosophers that<br />

nine<strong>te</strong>enth- and twentieth-century treatments of the problems of divine<br />

omniscience, and omnipo<strong>te</strong>nce and human freedom have added little to<br />

the discoveries of the earlier philosophers and theologians.' This<br />

observation might be true, but there is still a preliminary question to<br />

be raised: Are we adequa<strong>te</strong>ly familiar with the thought of the earlier<br />

theologians and philosophers? Every academic endeavour lives from<br />

the evolution of its knowledge, including its scientific revolutions.<br />

Progress also depends on the in<strong>te</strong>gration of old knowledge and only<br />
