Bulgaria has six medical schools, offers a six-year course of medical study and <strong>the</strong><br />

official language of education is primarily Bulgarian but many Bulgarian medical schools<br />

started offering programs in English except for clinical years where Bulgarian is required.<br />

European candidates are required to pass an exam in biology and chemistry 5 . The<br />

prerequisites for joining a Bulgarian medical school include completing high-school. The<br />

first two years of education are pre-clinical, <strong>the</strong> following three years are clinical training<br />

and <strong>the</strong> sixth year is <strong>the</strong> hospital internship year. The student is provided <strong>the</strong> degree of<br />

physician after <strong>the</strong> successful completion of <strong>the</strong> six years of study and <strong>the</strong> state exams.<br />

For specialization, graduates have to take tests and interviews in order to obtain a place in<br />

a specialization program ei<strong>the</strong>r in internal medicine (5 years), general practice (3 years),<br />

cardiology (4 years) or general surgery (5 years) 6 .<br />

Estonia has only one medical school at <strong>the</strong> Tartu University. Medical studies last for six<br />

years that can be followed by specialty training that lasts for four to five years. Training<br />

for general practice generally takes three years 7 . Hungary has four medical schools that<br />

provide a six-year medical program to obtain a physician degree 8 . The first two years are<br />

about <strong>the</strong>ory, followed by a third year about <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical foundations of disease and<br />

preliminaries in medicine and surgery, <strong>the</strong> fourth and fifth years focus on pharmacology<br />

and training in various clinical subjects and during <strong>the</strong> sixth year, students take <strong>the</strong>ir final<br />

examinations preceded by internship periods. Entry to polish medical schools requires <strong>the</strong><br />

completion of secondary/ high school while honors in biology, chemistry and physics are<br />

highly recommended 9 . Medical education in Poland lasts ei<strong>the</strong>r four or six years<br />

including practical training.<br />

In Romania, <strong>the</strong>re are eleven medical schools that provide six years of full-time study. To<br />

get admission to medical school, candidates need to pass a human biology, organic<br />

chemistry and/or physics test. The first three years of study are dedicated to pre-clinical<br />

curriculum while <strong>the</strong> following three years focus on clinical general medicine and<br />
