Deprivation in good sanitation is measured<br />
through households who do not have water closet<br />
latrine.<br />

)<br />
Deprivation in electricity lighting is measured through<br />
percentage <strong>of</strong> households who do not have the source<br />
<strong>of</strong> lighting as electricity.<br />
The above indicators for all districts in <strong>Kerala</strong> and by social<br />
groups have been derived from the housing data from<br />
Census 2001.<br />
The formula for calculating an index <strong>of</strong> deprivation is<br />
similar to that <strong>of</strong> human poverty index used by UNDP. The<br />
formula is as follows:<br />

If the = 1, the index <strong>of</strong> deprivation is the average <strong>of</strong> its<br />
indicators. As the increases, greater weight is given to<br />
the indicators in which there is the most deprivation. Like<br />
human poverty index, we have chosen a value <strong>of</strong> = 3<br />
for computing the index <strong>of</strong> deprivation.<br />
For an example, the index <strong>of</strong> deprivation for <strong>Kerala</strong> is<br />
computed as follows:<br />
