working in an office, the farmer who lives on his own toil, the porter who<br />

depends on his physical strength to gather the meagre means of livelihood,<br />

the blacksmith, the potter, the carpenter, the washerman, the<br />

barber - these are conscious of the activities which they have to follow<br />

<strong>and</strong> the sense of duty with which they have to follow them. <strong>The</strong>y know<br />

that their lives cannot flow smooth, when each one does not fill his assignment<br />

with dedication. <strong>The</strong>refore, they engage themselves in their<br />

profession as best as their intelligence, skills <strong>and</strong> aspirations allow.<br />

But, where is the need to prompt such people into further activity, to<br />

warn them <strong>and</strong> encourage them? We have to undertake this task only<br />

when they are unable or unwilling to carry out their duties. (...)<br />

Does “work” connote only acts by which food etc., are procured. Aircraft,<br />

ships, factories, hospitals are products of work. <strong>The</strong>y too can be<br />

said to involve only worldly material “work”. This type of work is important<br />

for living, <strong>and</strong> happy living here is a preparation for spiritual advancement<br />

in the hereafter. <strong>The</strong> more faulty one’s activities in his<br />

worldly pursuits, the less success will be for the individual, the society<br />

<strong>and</strong> the nation. <strong>The</strong>re can be no two opinions on these points. Nevertheless,<br />

men do not exert as efficiently <strong>and</strong> as enthusiastically for spiritual<br />

advancement, as they do for worldly success <strong>and</strong> fame. This is<br />

indeed a pity. (22-131/132)<br />

<strong>The</strong> relation between worldly <strong>and</strong> spiritual karmas has also to be examined.<br />

<strong>The</strong> rulers of worldly states have perforce to lay down hard <strong>and</strong> fast<br />

limitations <strong>and</strong> conditions, disciplines <strong>and</strong> duties in order to ensure<br />

welfare, prosperity <strong>and</strong> progress. Imagine then how many more such<br />

have to be imposed by the Lord who holds himself responsible for the<br />

entire cosmos! For the smooth <strong>and</strong> safe working of the various facets<br />

of nature, he has to prescribe flawless rules. Just contemplate how numerous<br />

<strong>and</strong> universal they have to be! <strong>The</strong>se affect every activity <strong>and</strong><br />

inactivity in nature. Each unit must have (<strong>and</strong> has) its own peculiar restrictions<br />

<strong>and</strong> regulations. It is, more or less, itself, within the larger<br />

frame-work. It has a separate head with limbs of government, co-ordinating<br />

duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities <strong>and</strong> co-operating with others.<br />

<strong>The</strong> prayers of the afflicted for timely help or useful guidance are attended<br />

to by the appropriate units only. <strong>The</strong>refore, if through ignorance<br />

or want of care, the pleading is addressed to the wrong head, what can<br />

he do? He can only cast it aside, remarking that it does not concern<br />

him since it has been wrongly addressed to him. So, prayers for spe-<br />
