There is no greater gift than the tranquillity of Peace. Peace is the foremost prize for man. Peace confers beauty on sages. Peace is the fascinating charm of the Divine. (18.8.95) This year (1998) is dedicated to peace. How is this peace to be achieved? The first requisite is purification of one's vision. The second is the cultivation of sacred feelings within, which will be conducive to purity in speech. Harmony will promote a climate of peace. The wellbeing of society is bound up with the transformation of the individuals composing it. Righteous individuals alone can build a righteous community. A pure mind is essential for pure thoughts, pure vision and pure speech. (5.2.98) Love If a person is a genuine vehicle of power, he can be recognized by the characteristics of truth, kindness, love, patience, forbearance and gratefulness. Wherever these reside, ego cannot subsist, it has no place. Seek, therefore, to develop these. The effulgence of the Atman is obscured by ego. Therefore when ego is destroyed, all troubles end, all discontents vanish and bliss is attained. As the sun is obscured by mist, the feeling of ego hides eternal bliss. (4-15/16) Every aspirant who seeks the eternal through the path of devotion should strive to acquire the following characteristics: He must keep away from the turmoil, the cruelty and the falsehood of this world and practice truth, righteousness, love and peace. This is indeed the path of devotion. Those who seek union with God, those who seek the welfare of the world should discard as worthless both praise and blame, appreciation and derision, prosperity and adversity. They should courageously keep steady faith in their own innate reality and dedicate themselves to spiritual uplift. No one, not even an Avatar can escape criticism and blame. (4-17/18) God cannot be known without faith and steadfastness; only through love comes faith; only through faith comes wisdom; only through wisdom comes Divine power; only through Divine power is God attained. 280
How then, is love to be cultivated? It can be done through two methods: 1. Consider always the faults of others, to be insignificant and negligible. Consider your own faults, however insignificant and negligible, to be big, and feel sad and repentant. By these means, you avoid developing bigger faults and defects and you acquire the qualities of brotherliness and forbearance. 2. Whatever you do, do it, remembering that God is omnipresent. He sees and hears and knows everything. Whatever you speak, remember that God hears every word; discriminate between the true and the false and speak only truth; whatever you do, discriminate between right and the wrong and do only the right. Endeavour every moment to be aware of the omnipotence of God. (4-19) Love, flows from one heart to another, from one place to another, from one person to another, ultimately reaching the destination called the grace of God; such love is pure. But the kind of love or love which gets tied up to one individual by saying: “Oh! He belongs to me, he is mine”, does not flow but gets tied up to one individual. Such love will be called love with an attachment to that particular individual. That kind of love, is narrow, confined to one place and cannot be called love in the real sense. (34-104) When this feeling spreads to various things that you like, it takes the form of desire. If this aspect is shown towards God, we call it devotion. This love is the aspect of Brahman and because this love is present in everyone, when we say: “We are stating a truth and an unquestionable truth“. This is also why we say: “Love is God, live in love”. We also say: “Start the day with love; spend the day with love; fill the day with love; end the day with love and this is the way to God”. The one aspect which fills the day and is synonymous with God is love and so we should fill the mind with the aspect of love. (36-40/41) Similarly if you wear the glasses of love, then all that you see in the world will be love. If your vision is not filled with love, how can the things that you see with your vision be full of love? (36-107) The pipe which connects the devotion of the devotee and the grace of God is love. God is always an embodiment of love and if the devotee is filled with love, then love can establish this connection. Unless you have all these three, God who is the original love and the link of love between the two, a connection cannot be established. God who is love can be realise only by love and not by any other means. (36-255) 281
