Rama and Krishna, religious teachers like Shankara, bearers of wisdom
like Buddha, Jesus, Christ and Mohamed - were they not all born
of women? Their mothers were embodiments of holy glory and they
gave the world sons who transformed it. Women who follow in their
footsteps and lead pure consecrated lives can claim the right to wisdom,
and no one can deny them.
In fact, the Atman is devoid of all differences between men and women.
It is eternal pure consciousness itself, and self illuminating. Women
can reach the status of those holy women, only when they become
aware of the nature of the Atman.
The patron deities of wisdom, Saraswathi, and wealth, Lakshmi, are all
women! It is not possible unbelievable that women have no right to
spiritual discipline, witch leads to merger with Brahman and the final
emancipation from bondage. (8-52/53)
The Bhagavadgita lists seven attributes to the feminine principle:
fame, wealth, speech, wisdom, intelligence, fortitude and determination.
The mother principle, which embodies these seven potencies, is
highly sacred. Wherever you turn, you will see manifestations of the
feminine principle in nature. When any person goes abroad, the first
question that is put is: "What is your mother-tongue?” No one asks,
“What is your father-tongue?” This shows how much importance is attached
to the role of the mother. The mother fosters her child in the
womb and goes through any hardship to protect it. There is no greater
love in the world than maternal love. Hence the ancients accorded the
highest honour to the mother and declared: "Esteem the mother as Divine”
and "Esteem the father as Divine”. For every person the first preceptor
is the mother. It is from the mother that a child learns its first
words of speech, the first steps in movement and many other primary
lessons in behaviour. Hence, the mother stands out as the reflected
image of nature. (6.5.96)
The women at home has been held in high esteem as "Grihalakshmi",
the goddess of prosperity of the home. When her husband faces difficulties,
the wife readily shares the burden and is prepared to do anything,
undergo any suffering or even sacrifice her life for the welfare of
her husband and the family. It is the women of the home who is behind
the good reputation of the home. The women is the embodiment of
sacrifice. Though the male counterpart may also make sacrifices, it is
with selfish tinge while women's sacrifice is absolutely selfless. We
should be proud of our women. (...)
