OM
When we say: “One without a second”, so also is OM. This one sound
OM is telling us that it is identical with Brahman. The sound of OM, the
“pranava” represents the entire content of the Brahman. This sound
OM is a combination of three syllables: A, U and M. The isolated sound
A cannot be the OM, the isolated sound U cannot be the OM. Similarly,
the isolated sound M cannot be the OM. A is something which is connected
with the awareness. The next sound U is a subtle one. This has
some inner significance. One will have to say that this is not only subtle
but has some relationship with the dream-state. Now the sound M is
causal. It is connected with the cause and effect and is related in some
way with deep sleep. (...)
If you are desirous of getting to know what is behind this OM, you will
have to make an attempt to (...) combine the three states, the waking
state, the dream state and the deep sleep state if you combine the
gross aspect, the subtle aspect and the causal aspect of the body into
one, you have a chance of getting a glimpse of the Divine soul. 1972,
One common basis for all the three aspects is the sound OM. This
sound has been recognized by the Sruti as identical with AUM, the
only letter that is significant. From time to time, our people have been
making enquiries into who can utter this sacred sound and who cannot.
But our Vedas have made no such distinction. Since this sound of
OM has been recognized as universal and is the life in all the Vedas,
it has been accepted that any one can utter it at all times. Without the
sound of sacred OM, the Vedas will become lifeless. Any individual, if
he utters this sacred sound OM towards the end of his life, will become
one with God. The Bhagavadgita has declared that this sound
OM is sacred to everyone and forms the basis of all creation. 1974,
(36-243)
Just as OM is the verbal symbol of God, the linga is the symbolic form
of the Godhead. It is just a form. Everything is delusion and to grasp
it, you must deal with illusion. Otherwise you cannot realize the deluding
power. God is as immanent in the universe. (...)
God is in every part of the world. I prefer the description “inner ruler of
all” to the description, inmost soul of all beings. All are in this hall, each
one has no hall in him, is it not? In the same way, all are in him; which
