his heart <strong>and</strong> become pure by surrendering to the Lord in anguished<br />

repentance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Lord's comm<strong>and</strong> is that each one should pursue the special Divine<br />

conduct laid down for him; each person should plan his life according<br />

to the spiritual foundations of his culture; he should give up the objective<br />

vision <strong>and</strong> listen to the voice of God. (2-7/9)<br />

When the desire to attain the fruit of action is renounced with full intellectual<br />

awareness, then it becomes what Krishna calls "yogabuddhi."<br />

<strong>The</strong> intellect has to be purified <strong>and</strong> trained; otherwise, it is impossible<br />

to give up attachment to the fruits of action <strong>and</strong> to continue doing<br />

things as either duty or dedication. Such a purified intellect has discrimination<br />

<strong>and</strong> sees unity. Cultivate this <strong>and</strong> then, through it, liberate<br />

yourself from the bondage of activity <strong>and</strong> consequence. <strong>The</strong> true you<br />

is above <strong>and</strong> beyond the consequence of activity. (...)<br />

<strong>The</strong> practice of this type of renunciation ends the state of bondage. (2-<br />

35/36)<br />

So along with the mastery of the senses, you must establish mastery<br />

of the mind. That is the sign of an enlightened, <strong>and</strong> not an unreasonable<br />

individual. Where does the unreasonable go? To perdition <strong>and</strong><br />

nowhere else.<br />

<strong>The</strong> upward path is for the enlightened. Of these two masteries, if the<br />

mind is controlled, that alone is enough. It is no longer necessary to<br />

conquer the external senses. If the mind has no attachment to objects,<br />

the senses have nothing to cling to; they perish by inaction; love <strong>and</strong><br />

hate are both starved out of existence. <strong>The</strong> bonds with the objective<br />

world are cut, though the senses may yet be affected by it. For he who<br />

has been blessed by an awareness of the Atman, how can anything<br />

worldly bring grief or joy? (...)<br />

As the stars fade into invisibility when the sun rises, so too when the<br />

sun of knowledge rises, grief, agitation <strong>and</strong> ignorance vanish.<br />

You have three chief instruments; the mind, the intellect, <strong>and</strong> the senses.<br />

It is when these three work in unison <strong>and</strong> co-operate with one another<br />

that liberation in the knowledge of the Atman, is realized. (2-42/<br />

43)<br />

If the wheel of creation is to move smoothly, each one has to keep<br />

working. No-one can get round this obligation. Even he who has<br />

achieved the highest wisdom has to observe this rule. Eating <strong>and</strong><br />
