Glossary
Arjuna - the disciple of Lord Krishna to whom Krishna revealed the
truth of human existence just prior to the opening battle of Mahabharata
war. The Divine discourse is known as the Bhagavadgita.
Atman - self; soul. Embodied self, the individual soul. Self, with no limitations,
is Brahman, the Supreme Cosmic Reality.
Avatar - incarnation of God. Descent of the Divine for the ascent of
man. Whenever there is a decline of Divine law, God comes down to
the world assuming bodily form to protect the good, punish the wicked
and reestablish right conduct. An Avatar is born and lives free and is
ever conscious of his mission. By his precept and example, he opens
up new paths in spirituality, shedding his grace on all.
Bhagavadgita - an important Hindu scripture containing the teaching
of Lord Krishna. (See Arjuna)
Bhagavatam - a sacred book composed by sage Vyasa dealing with
Vishnu and his incarnations, specially Krishna. A gospel on the Divine,
devotion and devotee.
Bharata (Hindi) - India.
Brahma - the creator; the first of Veda trinity.
Brahman - the Supreme Being; the absolute reality; impersonal God
with no form or attributes. The uncaused cause of the universe; existence-consciousness-bliss
(sat-chit-ananda) absolute; The eternal
changeless reality, not conditioned by time, space and causation. God
Brahman exists, smaller than the minutest molecule, larger than the
largest conceivable object, smaller than the smallest, greater than the
greatest.
Chakra - circle, wheel; lotuses, the chakras are centres of potential energy
(see kundalini) in the human anatomy. The chakras are important
on path of discipleship and initiation. They collect, transform and distribute
the power which streams through.
Darshan - act of seeing God, to see God, to live akin to God, to live a
close relationship to God,
a blessing held by various Hindus of an eminent person as a religious
leader.
Dharma - righteousness; religion; code of duty; essential nature of a
being or thing. It holds together the entire universe. Man is exhorted
to practice dharma to achieve material and spiritual welfare.
Devotee - is one who has intense selfless love for God.
