Glossary<br />

Arjuna - the disciple of Lord Krishna to whom Krishna revealed the<br />

truth of human existence just prior to the opening battle of Mahabharata<br />

war. <strong>The</strong> Divine discourse is known as the Bhagavadgita.<br />

Atman - self; soul. Embodied self, the individual soul. Self, with no limitations,<br />

is Brahman, the Supreme Cosmic Reality.<br />

<strong>Avatar</strong> - incarnation of God. Descent of the Divine for the ascent of<br />

man. Whenever there is a decline of Divine law, God comes down to<br />

the world assuming bodily form to protect the good, punish the wicked<br />

<strong>and</strong> reestablish right conduct. An <strong>Avatar</strong> is born <strong>and</strong> lives free <strong>and</strong> is<br />

ever conscious of his mission. By his precept <strong>and</strong> example, he opens<br />

up new paths in spirituality, shedding his grace on all.<br />

Bhagavadgita - an important Hindu scripture containing the teaching<br />

of Lord Krishna. (See Arjuna)<br />

Bhagavatam - a sacred book composed by sage Vyasa dealing with<br />

Vishnu <strong>and</strong> his incarnations, specially Krishna. A gospel on the Divine,<br />

devotion <strong>and</strong> devotee.<br />

Bharata (Hindi) - India.<br />

Brahma - the creator; the first of Veda trinity.<br />

Brahman - the Supreme Being; the absolute reality; impersonal God<br />

with no form or attributes. <strong>The</strong> uncaused cause of the universe; existence-consciousness-bliss<br />

(sat-chit-an<strong>and</strong>a) absolute; <strong>The</strong> eternal<br />

changeless reality, not conditioned by time, space <strong>and</strong> causation. God<br />

Brahman exists, smaller than the minutest molecule, larger than the<br />

largest conceivable object, smaller than the smallest, greater than the<br />

greatest.<br />

Chakra - circle, wheel; lotuses, the chakras are centres of potential energy<br />

(see kundalini) in the human anatomy. <strong>The</strong> chakras are important<br />

on path of discipleship <strong>and</strong> initiation. <strong>The</strong>y collect, transform <strong>and</strong> distribute<br />

the power which streams through.<br />

Darshan - act of seeing God, to see God, to live akin to God, to live a<br />

close relationship to God,<br />

a blessing held by various Hindus of an eminent person as a religious<br />

leader.<br />

Dharma - righteousness; religion; code of duty; essential nature of a<br />

being or thing. It holds together the entire universe. Man is exhorted<br />

to practice dharma to achieve material <strong>and</strong> spiritual welfare.<br />

Devotee - is one who has intense selfless love for God.<br />
