discrimination will not work. One should have faith <strong>and</strong> love. Without<br />

faith or pure love, whatever arguments you may enter into, whatever<br />

inquiry you make, will yield no results. If lost in doubt one can never<br />

achieve success even in many lives. (...)<br />

Only those who are eager to learn, who have faith in the teaching that<br />

should be learnt <strong>and</strong> trust they will experience Divinity, can be taught.<br />

<strong>The</strong> world today is in a very bad state. <strong>The</strong> situation can improve only<br />

through those who are believers in Divinity. <strong>The</strong>y should become embodiments<br />

of love, <strong>and</strong> by their spiritual discipline, backed by patience,<br />

forbearance <strong>and</strong> compassion, play their role in serving society <strong>and</strong><br />

contributing to the betterment of the world. God is present in you <strong>and</strong><br />

is viewing with thous<strong>and</strong>s of eyes what you do. Even if no one is seeing,<br />

God is always watching your actions. Do everything with this<br />

Students should learn the right way of doing things even in ordinary actions<br />

like sitting or reading. <strong>The</strong>y should sit erect <strong>and</strong> keep the spinal<br />

column straight. This enables the kundalini power to move up from the<br />

base of the spine to the top of the head through the vertebral column.<br />

This movement takes place during the yogic exercise known as breath<br />

control. This exercise is also useful for improving one's memory <strong>and</strong><br />

powers of concentration. (19.6.96)<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are three ways of calming the mercurial mind: 1. Regulated<br />

breathing. Inhale <strong>and</strong> exhale in a measured manner, watching its symmetry<br />

<strong>and</strong> balance; that will diminish the eagerness of the inner tongue<br />

to w<strong>and</strong>er into conversation. Finally it will give up the tendency, for<br />

good. 2. Engage yourselves in loving service of the diseased <strong>and</strong> the<br />

distressed. Undertake to teach a few children who have no one to<br />

guide them. Let your thoughts <strong>and</strong> activities be selfless <strong>and</strong> sincere.<br />

<strong>The</strong> itch to communicate to the mind will be healed thereby. You will<br />

feel that your energies are more fruitfully engaged in serving your fellows<br />

than in talking <strong>and</strong> discussing with your wavering mind. 3. <strong>The</strong><br />

third method of avoiding this type of conversation is spiritual exercise,<br />

resorted to in earnest <strong>and</strong> with regularity. It can be the repetition of<br />

name, recitation of mantras, chanting hymns or practice of yogic postures.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gayatri mantra can be used for this purpose. It is certain to<br />
