Man means he who marches from the status of self to the all-inclusive self, from higher self to God. Towards the success of that march, all nature can provide advice and guidance until the very end. The real master one must rely upon is nature, saturated with God. God does not teach you directly; he teaches you through nature which surrounds you. When you teach OM to children, you pronounce it loud and at the same time write the letter OM on a slate. God has written OM on every speck of nature; that is the slate from which you have to learn of him. So, do not renounce the world or condemn nature. Do not restrict the God of the universe to any one name and form. Love all names and forms. 17.7.81, (25-122) How many of those born are humans when born? How many grow into human status, after being born? How many who have lived as humans know the key to right living and right action? It is not by physical appearance that man is to be distinguished. 23.11.81, (25-215) What you need today is the restoration of the supremacy of truth and Righteousness. There are some who cavil at the use of these two terms. If they do not know what Truth and Righteousness are, they cannot be deemed human beings at all. Truth and Righteousness are the inherent natural qualities of human beings. Human life is based on Truth and Righteousness. What folly is it to declare that one does not know what they are? Truth is utterance of what you think. Righteousness is acting according to your words. The unity of thought, word and action is essential. (29.5.96) The whole world is a stage and every individual is an actor. How should the actors conduct themselves? The primary goal of every actor should be to carry out his duty in the part assigned to him (or her). He should set aside his individuality. (...) He should act his part well. However, who is the director of the cosmic drama? It is the Divine. Every human being is a manifestation of the Divine will. He has taken birth as a human being to fulfil his duty. He has to manifest his humanness. Every individual has to play his role well and acquit himself worthily. In the drama of life, there is a mixture of good and bad. Humanness is present in this mixture. The good implies that man acts on the knowledge that nothing belongs to him and that whatever words he utters or 272
whatever action he does all belong to God. He plays his role in this spirit, ascribing nothing to himself. The bad represents the attitude of the actor, who is conscious of the role he is playing and does not forget his individuality in his actions. He does not consider himself as merely acting a part but regards himself as the doer. The difference between the two is that while the former realises the temporary nature of the part he is playing and is not attached to the things connected with the role, the other develops attachment to the role he plays and does not wish to part with things connected with the role. (...) Human birth is a God-given gift which should be used with due care. It should be filled with righteous acts. Unfortunately, today men misuse all their God-given talents for unholy purposes. The mind should be filled with good thoughts, the heart with compassion and the hands should be engaged in selfless service. (15.2.98) Peace May this stream of love put out the burning fires of disquiet, ignorance, injustice, and religion that are consuming you and may it slake your thirst. May it shower on you peace, joy and happiness. There are many people who are not even aware of the meaning of the word, Prashanti. For the devotee it is as the very breath. The word is taken by each to mean something different; many feel that they have peace; when some worldly desire that was vexing them is satisfied! But, that is not real peace, it is but a temporary short-lived interval between one worry and another. The syllable “Pra” in Prashanti means, expanding, enlarging, and so Prashanti means that type of peace, that is the absence of desire, anger, greed and hatred. (3-1) Prashanti means success in the elimination of the qualities, grouped under activity and anger. This process is essential. The devotee must be constantly engaged in practising it. What does the devotee strive for? Fulfillment. In other words, he strives for peace. Now this peace is the innate nature of man. Peace is the force, which comes to the aid of those who try to develop discrimination, renunciation and keenness of intellect. It is a phase of the eternal Divinity itself. Just as the eternal Divinity, it has no beginning or end; no blemish can mar it; it is equalled only by itself; it cannot be compared with anything else. Peace must be manifested in feeling, word, posture and deed. (...) 273
