three types of lingas can emerge. <strong>The</strong>y are bhur, bhuvah <strong>and</strong> svaha.<br />

Bhur refers to materialization (body), bhuva refers to vibration (prana)<br />

<strong>and</strong> svaha refers to radiation (Atman). Whoever has seen this linga at<br />

the time of its emergence will not have rebirth.<br />

Loka - any of the 14 worlds (visible <strong>and</strong> invisible) inhabited by living<br />

beings.<br />

Mantra - a sacred formula, music syllable or word syrribol uttered during<br />

the performance of rituals or meditation. <strong>The</strong>y represent the spiritual<br />

truths directly revealed to the Rishis (seers).<br />

Maya - the mysterious, creative <strong>and</strong> delusive power of Brahman<br />

through which God projects the appearance of the universe. Maya is<br />

the material cause <strong>and</strong> Brahman is the effective cause of the universe.<br />

Brahman <strong>and</strong> maya are inexcritably associated with each other like fire<br />

<strong>and</strong> its power to heat. Maya deludes living beings in egoism, making<br />

them forget their true spiritual nature.<br />

Purana - the ancient texts in which Veda truths are illustrated through<br />

tales of Divine incarnations <strong>and</strong> heroes. Sage Vyasa is believed to<br />

have written them. Of the 18 Puranas, Srimath Bhagavata is best<br />

known.<br />

Rama - name for the seventh Incarnation (<strong>Avatar</strong>) of Vishnu.<br />

Rishi - great saint, knowing the omnipresence of God. <strong>The</strong>re are seven<br />

great Rishis, the spirit-born sons of Brahman. <strong>The</strong>ir images are the<br />

seven stars of the Great Bears.<br />

Sahasramana - the thous<strong>and</strong> names of God. In the Mahabharata the<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> names of Vishnu declared.<br />

Shakti - the great universal power or energy - the creative power of<br />

Brahman; a name for the Divine master. Shakti means the wife from<br />

Shiva too.<br />

Shankara - an Indian saint. Shankara propagated the ancient <strong>and</strong><br />

Veda teaching in the form of Advaitavedanta or non-dual philosophy.<br />

It is absolutely necessary for everyone to realize this one supreme<br />

thing behind all creation.<br />

Shastra - the ancient scriptures containing the teachings of the Rishis.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Vedas, the Upanishads <strong>and</strong> the epics, the Puranas <strong>and</strong> the Smritis<br />

(codes of conduct), etc, form the Shastras of the Bharathiyas.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y teach us how to live wisely <strong>and</strong> well with all the tenderness <strong>and</strong><br />

concern of the mother.<br />

Shiva - is the beneficent aspect of Mahesvara. <strong>The</strong> third of the supreme<br />

trinity of supreme deities; God. His symbol is the Shivalinga. It<br />

is the symbol of creation of the universe.<br />
