Guna - three natural modes or qualities as composite of maya, called sattva, rajas and tamas. Sattva means purity, calmness, peace, silence. Rajas means activity, restlessness, passionate. Tamas means lethargy, stupidity, dullness, obstacle. When tamas and rajas have their impact, creation is caused and the cosmos comes about. They agitate living beings into activity. When the 3 modes of maya are in balance and in a state of unruffled equipoise, the universe is termed unmanifest. Guru - spiritual guide, master; a knower of Brahman, who is calm, merciful and ever ready to help and guide the spiritual aspirants who approach him. The cosmic guru is the Avatar. Hiranyagarbha - the golden egg, the golden sprout. Indra - it is the Lord from the intuition level and from the cosmic mental plan. It is the Divinity concerned with rain. Kailasa - is the holy mountain in the Himalaya, where Shiva and Shakti reside. Karma - action; deed; work; religious rite; the totality of innate landencies formed as a consequence of acts done in previous lives. Every karma produces a lasting impression on the mind of the doer, apart from affecting others. Repetition of a particular karma produces a tendency in the mind. Karma is of three kinds: 1. Prarabdha: which is being exhausted in present life, 2. Agami: which is being accumulated in the present life and 3. Samchita which is being stored to be experienced in future lives. Akarma is on action done without any intention to gain the consequences; Vikarma is the action that is intentionally done. Kundalini - latent and active fire, cosmic power. In the science of kundalini yoga, the vital energy of man lying dormant like a coiled snake, at the bottom of thin column in the lowest muladhara chakra, the basic wheel is to be awakened and aroused, so that it courses up through more wheels (centres of superior consciousness) until it reaches the thousand-petalled lotus wheel at the very top of the skull. The passage for the kundalini is through the sushumna nerve in the centre of the spinal column. The worship of the snake, ridiculed as superstition, is the symbolic counterpart of this great yogic spiritual discipline which confers vigour and vitality. But through the kundalini-power and its ascent through the chakras, it is well-nigh impossible to realise the universal Atman. Linga - it is the symbolic form of the Godhead. On every Maha-Shivaratri lingas emerge from the Avatar Sathya Sai Baba. Not only this, 464
three types of lingas can emerge. They are bhur, bhuvah and svaha. Bhur refers to materialization (body), bhuva refers to vibration (prana) and svaha refers to radiation (Atman). Whoever has seen this linga at the time of its emergence will not have rebirth. Loka - any of the 14 worlds (visible and invisible) inhabited by living beings. Mantra - a sacred formula, music syllable or word syrribol uttered during the performance of rituals or meditation. They represent the spiritual truths directly revealed to the Rishis (seers). Maya - the mysterious, creative and delusive power of Brahman through which God projects the appearance of the universe. Maya is the material cause and Brahman is the effective cause of the universe. Brahman and maya are inexcritably associated with each other like fire and its power to heat. Maya deludes living beings in egoism, making them forget their true spiritual nature. Purana - the ancient texts in which Veda truths are illustrated through tales of Divine incarnations and heroes. Sage Vyasa is believed to have written them. Of the 18 Puranas, Srimath Bhagavata is best known. Rama - name for the seventh Incarnation (Avatar) of Vishnu. Rishi - great saint, knowing the omnipresence of God. There are seven great Rishis, the spirit-born sons of Brahman. Their images are the seven stars of the Great Bears. Sahasramana - the thousand names of God. In the Mahabharata the thousand names of Vishnu declared. Shakti - the great universal power or energy - the creative power of Brahman; a name for the Divine master. Shakti means the wife from Shiva too. Shankara - an Indian saint. Shankara propagated the ancient and Veda teaching in the form of Advaitavedanta or non-dual philosophy. It is absolutely necessary for everyone to realize this one supreme thing behind all creation. Shastra - the ancient scriptures containing the teachings of the Rishis. The Vedas, the Upanishads and the epics, the Puranas and the Smritis (codes of conduct), etc, form the Shastras of the Bharathiyas. They teach us how to live wisely and well with all the tenderness and concern of the mother. Shiva - is the beneficent aspect of Mahesvara. The third of the supreme trinity of supreme deities; God. His symbol is the Shivalinga. It is the symbol of creation of the universe. 465
