When the magnet does not attract the needle, the fault lies in the dirt
that covers the needle. When the Lord does not approach the devotee
the fault lies in the heart of the devotee; it is not pure enough. (27-22)
When one has attained the state of realising the Divinity in every being,
when every instrument of knowledge brings the experience of that Divinity,
when it alone is seen, heard, tasted, smelt and touched, man
becomes undoubtedly a part of the body of God and lives in Him and
with Him. When this duty to your own progress is taken up you will get
a new strength at the very first step; you will thrill to a new and purer
joy; you will taste the fullness of bliss; you will be refreshed by a new
holiness. (27-25)
The rosary teaches you unity, though it has 108 beads! If it is a crystal
rosary you can see the string running in and through each pead, the
inner reality on which all are strung! If the peads are not transparent,
you still know that the string passes through, holds together, and is the
basis for the rosary to exist! Why 108 pearls? 108 is the product when
12 is multiplied 9 times. 12 is the number of Gods, luminaries that reveal
the objective world, and so. Symbols of the world of name and
form, of manifoldness, the seeming variety, the fleeting picture; 9 is the
screen on which appear pictures of the basis, the rope which deludes
you as the snake in the dusk, Brahman, the nameless, formless, Eternal
Absolute. 9 is the Brahman number, for it is always 9, how ever
many times you multiply it! It is immutable, for 9 into any number adds
up to 9 only. So, when you turn the peads, impress upon your self the
fact that there is both truth and travesty in the world, the travesty attracts,
distracts and delights in deceiving you, diverts you into devious
paths; the truth makes you free!
Hold the rosary over the middle finger, keeping the three “guna” (basic
quality) fingers together. This means that you are now transcending
the world of attributes, and qualities, of name and form, of multiplicity
that is the consequence of all this transformation, and proceeding towards
the knowledge of the unity. The forefinger now slowly passes
each pead towards the thumb (Brahman), touching the tip of the Brahman
finger when the pead passes over, so that the mergence is empaslsed
with every pearl and every breath, for, while the fingers learn
and teach the lesson, the tongue too repeats the name, with the OM.
The rosary is very useful for beginners in spiritual discipline, but, as
you progress, recitation of God’s names must become the very breath
