Good Design in This Remodeled Facade

In the remodeling of this Canadian theatre the entrance was moved from a center location to the
corner, permitting an extension of the lobby almost to the sidey/alk. Lobby-length glass doors permit a
view of the interior from the street. The V-shaped marquee has plenty of room for the program copy,
and attracts the eye with a bottom tier of flashing lights. The upper front of the old building was modernized
by simply plastering over the former lines.

can be done to revamp the front appearance
of a small theatre is shown in renovations
recently completed for the Mayfair
Theatre, a small neighborhood house
in west Toronto, Ontario.
Once before, some years ago. the Mayfair
underwent extensive interior refurnishing.
However this time emphasis was
placed upon "face lifting" the theatre's
dull, unattractive front. The result has
been that an outmoded and somewhat
Spanish architecture has been replaced
by an entrance which would do credit to
a larger and more recently completed
theatre.
Upper part of the theatre's front has
been cleverly camouflaged simply by replastering
over the older lines. The new
marquee, coupled with a bottom tier of
flashing lights, naturally distracts the eye
from the replastered portion. The V-
shape marquee itself extends out over the
street above the new entrance, which was
moved from its center location to a corner
position formerly occupied by a small adjoining
shop.
This arrangement has permitted the
lobby to be extended practically to the
sidewalk, thus giving it a greater spaciousness.
A full view of the lobby and its
activities is given to those passing by on
the street by a lobby-length glass front.
This view includes the newly installed
candy bar, which extends the width of the
center aisle. Pull-drapes can close this
view when the theatre is closed.

by the newest reflector-type of lighting.
The Mayfair is owned by the Twentieth
Century circuit. Upon reopening in November,
the theatre joined three other
neighborhood theatres and one downtown
house in playing first-run features of a
high quality.

with the upper picture will show how the outmoded
architectural style was given a "face lifting."
