for using heavily patterned, multicolored
designs in contract work was to mask surface
soil and footprints as much and as
long as possible. The tone-on-tone carpet,
whether used in the home or in a public
Installation, has been proved to be as remarkably
soil resistant as its more colorful
counterpart.
ARCHITECTURAL MOTIF POPULAR
Theatre owners, architects and decorators
are demanding more modern designs
In theatre carpeting. The most popular
design today is the architectural motif.
Abstract designs have had a limited appeal.
While textured effects and texture weaves
are in wide demand for consumer carpets
and rugs few texture weaves are used in
contract installations. Special grades of
carpet, of course, are usually used for public
installations. These are constructed to
take the brunt of heavy traffic and abuse.
The demand for heavily textured effects,
achieved through the use of color, and
design, are also much in favor today.
Color trends in theatre carpets follow
the general trend in wanted carpet colors.
The cocoa tones, from mocha to rich
chocolate and the variations of spice tones,
are practical as well as agreeable colors
for theatre floor coverings. Greens, particularly
the forest greens, are very good.
When varicolored effects are used it is to
be noted that they have taken a definite
turn toward muted and skillfully
blended colors.
WOOL STILL PREDOMINATES
The increasing use of man-made fibers
is evident in contract carpets but not to
as great a degree as in consumer goods.
Most contract carpets are still made of
wool. However, where blends are used they
have been engineered to give the best performance
for the use the carpet will be
put to. Because of the price, nylon carpets
have not been widely used in contract installations
except in salons, specialty shops,
hotels, steamships, art galleries, etc. The
new woven cotton carpets; made on heavyduty
looms and featuring standard carpet
backs are still new enough not to have
case histories for performance but it is
interesting to note that a number of
hotels, motels and restaurants have already
installed woven cotton carpets.
