use until the firemen arrive. An extinguisher
which has its nozzle stopped up
by corrosion, or one in which the acid and
soda have lost their potency, is as dangerous
in an emergency as throwing gasoline
on the flames. Gaskets on this type of extinguisher
should be replaced if not tight,
and both the acid and the soda must be
replaced every year. These containers
should be tagged with the date on which
they are refilled. The soda-acid extinguisher
is one of the most useful and effective
in dealing with small fires, and
after using, should be washed out and refilled
for future use.
The carbon-tetrachloride type of extinguisher
is especially useful for electrical
fires since it is not a conductor of electricity
such as the water and soda-acid extinguishers
are. This extinguisher usually
works by hand-pump method. It should be
kept refilled at all times and may be used
for all types of fires.

The third type of extinguisher is in appearance
similar to the soda-acid container.
It has a smothering effect and is
considered by many the most modern and
effective of all three. In addition to general
use for electrical fires, it is the most
effective in dealing with oil or gasoline conflagrations.
Where local fire regulations require a
gravity roof tank, complete dependence
should never be placed in electrical telltale
systems. At least once a month, a visit
should be made to the roof by an authorized
person, preferably the manager, who
should climb to the top of the tank and
look in to make sure that the water is
above the safety line. Sprinkler heads, if
faulty, should be replaced immediately.
Where local ordinance requires a reserve
tank on the premises for use before the
arrival of the fire department, this supply
of water also should be checked periodically
and the test system operated al least
once each week to make sure the motor
and automatic devices are in proper working
condition.
Fire hoses should be inspected periodically
to make sure there is no danger of
bursting from pressure due to old age. Hose
nozzles should be kept clear, and a spanning
device be located visibly at every fire
box.

Carpets which are torn represent hazards
to the safety of the audience in any emergency.
Exit doors and alleyways must at
all times be kept clear of any obstructions
which would impede patrons attempting
to leave the theatre under emergency conditions.
Exit lights should be checked daily
and replaced where necessary. Panic bolts
on all exit doors should be oiled frequently
and kept in perfect operating condition.
The exhibitor or theatre manager will
find it expedient to conduct periodic fire
drills with all employes so that, should an
emergency arise, they will be familiar with
the location of the fire-fighting equipment
and the manner of discharging the audience
from the theatre with minimum
danger of accidents.
Self assurance and confidence are the
greatest assets a theatre staff can have in
an emergency. To this end, the knowledge
that the theatre is free from most of the
normal hazards of fire is the best guarantee
that the staff will react coolly and
confidently should danger from fire arise.
There is an old saying that nearly all
big fires start out as a small flame. The
theatre owner's responsibility, therefore, is
to train his staff to cope with these small
fires when they occur, and to extinguish
them before they become unmanageable.
