which give diversification of pattern yet
are completely compatible in colorings.
These will be an excellent guide for any
one decorating or redecorating a theatre.
Rooms completely apart from the rest of
the theatre, such as smoking lounges and
powder rooms, can utilize papers which
have no relationship in coloring or design
with the other papers in the theatre.
7 7. Will wallpaper tie-in with local interests?
There is a vast selection of wall paper
to meet the requirements of any regional
group. Some will feature motifs which
bring to mind the wide open spaces of the
great southwest, others show scenes from
old New England or the colonial south.
Wheat motifs are popular in in the midwest
and river scenes are appropriate for
theatres along the banks of the Mississippi
and other of our great rivers. Magnolias
and other semi-tropical florals are of just
as much interest to the south as cactus
and other desert plants are to the west
and pine cones are to the inhabitants of
the far north.
72. Are wallpaper borders useful?
Borders have many uses in theatres.
They can be used as dividers to cut a toohigh
wall into sections. They are good as
an accent note along the narrow bulwark
of a balcony, to outline the stage, as a
finishing note on boxes, and in any spot
which does not otherwise lend itself to
more complete decoration.
73. Where should bold patterns be used?
Bold patterns should be used primarily
in those sections where you desire dramatl
points of interest—the lobby, lounge rooms
and any other area not devoted to actua
theatrical production.
14. What can wallpaper do to camouflagi ^
architectural defects?
ll
There are innumerable ways by which
the theatre decorator can pull sleight-of-'
hand tricks to get the desired effects. Ligh'
colors tend to make a room seem larger
while dark tones will seem to reduce the
apparent area. Large sprawling pattern;
also tend to decrease the size of a room
Walls can be lengthened or shortened
rooms can be widened or narrowed, and
ceilings can be raised or lowered by the
judicious use of wallpaper. Dark shades
will tend to draw the wall or ceiling nearei
while the lighter tones will make it seem
to recede and give the illusion of more^
space. A bit of experimentation will helpi
|
the theatre decorator achieve any desired^
effect. Vertical stripes will always add
height and horizontal patterns will, ol
course, have exactly the opposite effect
Scenics seem to push the walls back and|
gives an illusion of distance and open
vistas.
75. How should one take care of wallpaper?
In the modern air-conditioned theatre
there is very little dust and the walls will
stay cleaner far longer than in other types
of buildings. They should be dusted occasionally
with a soft brush or with an
extension pipe and brush of a vacuum
cleaner. Finger marks or other spots can
be removed with regular dough-type wallpaper
cleaner without leaving rings. For
added protection in strategic spots such
as around light switches, water fountains
or passageways, a coat of dull finish, clear
wallpaper lacquer can be either sprayed or
brushed on to the surface.
