because of the active traffic between<br />

southern states and neighbouring<br />

countries – Uruguay, Argentina and<br />

In June, the State of Santa Catarina<br />

witnessed the sea encroachment<br />

phenomenon in 6 municipalities (Barra<br />

Velha, Bombinhas, Navegantes,<br />

Balneario de Camboriu, Balneario<br />

Barra do Sul and Itapoa) and in 01<br />

municipality in the State of Parana<br />

(Matinhos)<br />

Still in Santa Catarina, the municipalities of Grao-Para, Santa Terezinha (January)<br />

and Laguna (April) suffered the effects of windstorms and, in Rio Grande do Sul,<br />

the municipalities of Ijui, Camaqua and Cotipora were affected by hail rains<br />

In January dry spells were reported in the municipalities of Braga and Coronel<br />

Bicaço (Rio Grande do Sul) This disaster remained in early 2002; more intensely<br />

in the States of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul<br />
