Case Study #1 243
Two phases of testing are planned. The first will establish an initial
database for the IGCC combustor operating on nominal composition
syngas and natural gas in a generic test stand. Studies also cover the
effect of extracting up to twenty percent of compressor discharge flow
from the combustion case, cofiring, minimum heating value trials,
ammonia conversion rates and demonstration of NO x
control capabilities.
This first phase of testing will allow opportunity for hardware
modifications and will result in a validated production design. The
second phase will concentrate on production design verification, operation
on different fuels, fuel transfers and operating procedures.
This second test sequence will utilize a new test stand and facility,
custom built to simulate the MS6001FA combustion operating environment.
Initial field runs will take place at the Sierra Pacific Piñon
Pine facility in the third quarter of 1996, with December 1996 as the
date for commercial operation and demonstrations to begin. (Figure
14-6, IGCC Combustion Test Schedule)
Thermal oxidation of fuel nitrogen and oxidation of nitrogen species,
such as ammonia, are two contributors to overall NO x
output.
Thermal NO x
emissions on syngas are guaranteed at 32 ppm @15%
O 2
unabated. With mixed flow (spiking) or co-firing and steam dilution
the guarantee is 42 ppm @ 15% O 2
. Laboratory testing will determine
what lower levels are achievable with steam injection for 100%
syngas and natural gas/syngas mixtures. The aim is to demonstrate
