Case Study #4<br />

CCase study #4 demonstrates the use of microturbines, fueled<br />

with l<strong>and</strong>fill gas, in providing electric power <strong>and</strong> heat for a<br />

262,000 square foot high school. The microturbines, operating<br />

at 96,000 rpm, produce 360 kW of electricity <strong>and</strong> 3.48 million Btu/hr,<br />

at 550 0 F, of exhaust energy.<br />

The HOD L<strong>and</strong>fill, located within the Village of Antioch in<br />

Lake County, northeastern Illinois, is a Superfund site consisting of<br />

approximately 51 acres of l<strong>and</strong>filled area. On September 28, 1998,<br />

the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) issued<br />

a Record of Decision (ROD) for the site requiring that specific l<strong>and</strong>fill<br />

closure activities take place. The Remedial Action (in response to<br />

the ROD), which was completed in January 2001, included the<br />

installation of a l<strong>and</strong>fill gas collection system with 35 dual gas <strong>and</strong><br />

leachate extraction wells. This system collects approximately 300<br />
