with the centrifugal compressor <strong>and</strong> turbine wheels mounted<br />

on the same shaft as the electric generator, weights 165 pounds.<br />

<strong>and</strong> assembly. A typical gas turbine, over 1 megawatt, has over 4000<br />

parts. About one third of these parts are made from exotic materials that<br />

incur high development cost. Each of the 4000 parts must be h<strong>and</strong>led<br />

several times from initial machining to final installation. Maintaining<br />

this machine is every bit as complicated, requiring the same technical<br />

skills, as building a new unit.<br />
