RESEARCH COLLABORATION
We have been active in national and international research collaboration since 1995. Academic visits
have been made to Institute of Engineering Mechanics, the Institute of Geophysics of the China
Seismological Bureau, the Institute of Earthquake Engineering of China Academy of Building
Research of Ministry of Construction of China, Tongji University, and Harbin Industrial University.
More recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China granted its first kind ever of national
important project on intelligent vibration control of civil engineering structures, in which the Hong
Kong Polytechnic University is also involved.
Internationally, we have linked with the University of California at Berkeley, USA, and the University
of Turin, University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois, Mid-America Earthquake Center, and the
newly formed ANCER (Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research),
which comprising of 7 regional earthquake research centers. Figure 19 shows a group photograph
taken when we participated in the Taiwan Strait Conference on Cities Hazard Mitigation in 2000.

CONCLUSIONS
The earthquake hazard and risk problems of Hong Kong have been discussed briefly in this paper.
Some new results and views were presented, especially regarding the potential hazard induced by the
Dangan Island seismic source. Significant progress has been made in Hong Kong in the field of
earthquake engineering in the past ten years, but there are still other research topics and urgent tasks
faced by researchers and other professionals in Hong Kong. National and international collaboration is
inevitable to speed up the research progress, the development of seismic design standards for building
structures, and the implementation of new technologies for seismic hazard mitigation. This can be
realized through exchange of data and information, jointly organized seminars and conferences,
collaborative research projects, and exchange of personnel.
