24: <strong>The</strong> Third Miracle<br />
(Sakka, the Lord of the Gods)<br />
Atha kho Sakko Devānam-indo, abhikkantāya rattiyā,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n Sakka, the Lord of the Gods, 178 towards the end of the night,<br />
abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ obhāsetvā,<br />
having lit up the whole of that jungle thicket with his surpassing beauty,<br />
yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami,<br />
approached the Gracious One,<br />
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā, ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhāsi<br />
and after approaching and worshipping the Gracious One, he stood at one side<br />
seyyathā pi mahā-aggikkhandho,<br />
like a great mass of fire,<br />
purimāhi vaṇṇanibhāhi, abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca.<br />
(having colours) more brilliant, and more excellent, than the former colours.<br />
Atha kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo, tassā rattiyā accayena,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the yogi Uruvelakassapa, with the passing of that night,<br />
yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami,<br />
approached the Gracious One,<br />
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:<br />
and after approaching he said this to the Gracious One:<br />
“Kālo Mahāsamaṇa niṭṭhitaṁ bhattaṁ.<br />
“It is time, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, the meal is ready.<br />
Ko nu kho so Mahāsamaṇa abhikkantāya rattiyā,<br />
Who was that, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, towards the end of the night, who,<br />
abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ vanasaṇḍaṁ obhāsetvā,<br />
having lit up the whole of that jungle thicket with his surpassing beauty,<br />
yena tvaṁ tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā taṁ abhivādetvā,<br />
approached you, and after approaching and worshipping you,<br />
ekam-antaṁ aṭṭhāsi seyyathā pi mahā-aggikkhandho,<br />
stood at one side like a great mass of fire,<br />
178 He lives in the Tāvatiṁsadevaloka, the heavenly realm of the thirty-three gods, which<br />
stands just above the realm of the Four <strong>Great</strong> Kings.
