paṭhamataraṁ āgantvā, agyāgāre nisinno.<br />

and arriving earlier, I sat down in the sacrificial firehouse.<br />

Idaṁ kho Kassapa Pāricchattakapupphaṁ,<br />

This is the Coral tree flower, Kassapa,<br />

vaṇṇasampannaṁ gandhasampannaṁ,<br />

endowed with (good) colour and scent,<br />

sace ākaṅkhasi, gaṇhā.” ti<br />

if you wish, you can take (it).”<br />

“Alaṁ Mahāsamaṇa tvaṁ yeva taṁ ārahasi, tvaṁ yeva taṁ gaṇhā” ti<br />

“Enough, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, you surely brought it, you should surely take it.”<br />

Atha kho Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa etad-ahosi:<br />

<strong>The</strong>n this occurred to the yogi Uruvelakassapa:<br />

“Mahiddhiko kho Mahāsamaṇo mahānubhāvo,<br />

“Powerful and majestic is this <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic,<br />

yatra hi nāma maṁ paṭhamataraṁ uyyojetvā,<br />

since after sending me away earlier,<br />

Tāvatiṁsaṁ gantvā Pāricchattakapupphaṁ gahetvā,<br />

going to the Tāvatiṁsa (Heaven), picking a Coral tree flower,<br />

paṭhamataraṁ āgantvā agyāgāre nisīdissati,<br />

and arriving earlier, he can sit down in the sacrificial firehouse,<br />

na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.”-ti<br />

but he is surely not a Worthy One like I am.” 182<br />

182 <strong>The</strong> follow-up phrase which in the preceding accounts appears at this location, to the<br />

effect that the Gracious One, having eaten Kassapa’s food, dwelt on in the jungle thicket, is<br />

missing from here on.
