Atha kho seṭṭhī gahapati yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the merchant householder approached the Gracious One,<br />
upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:<br />
and after approaching he said this to the Gracious One:<br />
“Api Bhante Bhagavā Yasaṁ kulaputtaṁ passeyyā” ti<br />
“Has the Gracious One, venerable Sir, seen the young man Yasa”<br />
“Tena hi gahapati nisīda appeva nāma idha nisinno<br />
“Sit, householder, and it may be that while you are sitting here<br />
idha nisinnaṁ Yasaṁ kulaputtaṁ passeyyāsī.” ti<br />
you will see the young man Yasa sitting here.”<br />
Atha kho seṭṭhī gahapati: “Idheva kirāhaṁ nisinno<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the merchant householder (thought): “It seems that while sitting here<br />
idha nisinnaṁ Yasaṁ kulaputtaṁ passissāmī,” ti<br />
I will see the young man Yasa sitting here,”<br />
haṭṭho udaggo Bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekam-antaṁ nisīdi.<br />
and joyful, uplifted, after worshipping the Gracious One, he sat down on one side.<br />
Ekam-antaṁ nisinnassa kho seṭṭhissa gahapatissa<br />
To the merchant householder, sitting at one side<br />
Bhagavā anupubbikathaṁ kathesi,<br />
the Gracious One spoke about the gradual teaching,<br />
seyyathīdaṁ: dānakathaṁ sīlakathaṁ saggakathaṁ,<br />
that is to say: talk about giving, talk about virtue, talk about heaven,<br />
kāmānaṁ ādīnavaṁ okāraṁ saṅkilesaṁ,<br />
the danger, degradation, and defilement of sensual desires,<br />
nekkhamme ānisaṁsaṁ pakāsesi.<br />
and the advantages of renunciation, (these) he explained.<br />
Yadā Bhagavā aññāsi seṭṭhiṁ gahapatiṁ<br />
When the Gracious One knew that the merchant householder<br />
kallacittaṁ muducittaṁ vinīvaraṇacittaṁ udaggacittaṁ pasannacittaṁ,<br />
had a ready mind, a pliable mind, an open mind, an uplifted mind, a confident mind,<br />
atha yā Buddhānaṁ sāmukkaṁsikā Dhammadesanā taṁ pakāsesi:<br />
he explained to him the Dhamma teaching the Awakened Ones have discovered<br />
themselves:
