Atha kho Rājā Māgadho Seniyo Bimbisāro, tassā rattiyā accayena,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the Magadhan King Seniya Bimbisāra, with the passing of that night,<br />
paṇītaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ paṭiyādāpetvā,<br />
having had excellent food and drinks made ready,<br />
Bhagavato kālaṁ ārocāpesi: “Kālo bhante niṭṭhitaṁ bhattan”-ti.<br />
had the time announced to the Gracious One, (saying): “It is time, reverend Sir, the<br />
meal is ready.”<br />
Atha kho Bhagavā, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, having dressed in the morning time,<br />
pattacīvaram-ādāya, Rājagahaṁ pāvisi,<br />
after taking up his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha,<br />
mahatā Bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṁ,<br />
together with a great Community of monks,<br />
bhikkhusahassena sabbeheva purāṇajaṭilehi.<br />
with a thousand monks all of whom were formerly yogis.<br />
Tena kho pana samayena Sakko Devānam-indo,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n at that time Sakka, the Lord of the Gods,<br />
māṇavakavaṇṇaṁ abhinimminitvā,<br />
having created (for himself) the form of a young brāhmaṇa,<br />
Buddhappamukhassa Bhikkhusaṅghassa purato purato gacchati<br />
went ahead of the Community of monks with the Buddha at its head<br />
imā gāthāyo gāyamāno:<br />
singing these verses: 205<br />
Danto dantehi saha purāṇajaṭilehi Vippamutto Vippamuttehi,<br />
<strong>The</strong> Tamed One with the Tamed, with the former yogis, the Liberated One with<br />
the Liberated,<br />
Siṅgīnikkhasuvaṇṇo Rājagahaṁ pāvisī Bhagavā.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Gracious One who has skin like a golden coin has entered Rājagaha.<br />
205 Jā Nid explains that the whole citizenry of Rājagaha (1,800,000) had come out to the<br />
Laṭṭhivana and were blocking the road. Sakka’s seat in Tāvatiṁsa became hot and he<br />
understood the Buddha might not get his meal, so he descended and opened up the way,<br />
praising the Buddha as he went.
