<strong>The</strong> <strong>Great</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong> - 142<br />
Addasā kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo Bhagavantaṁ, samantā udakaṁ ussādetvā,<br />
<strong>The</strong> yogi Uruvelakassapa saw that the Gracious One, having risen above the water on<br />
all sides,<br />
majjhe reṇuhatāya bhūmiyā caṅkamantaṁ,<br />
was walking (on an island) in the middle of dusty ground,<br />
disvāna Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:<br />
and after seeing (it), he said this to the Gracious One:<br />
“Idha nu tvaṁ Mahāsamaṇā” ti<br />
“Are you here, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic”<br />
“Ayam-aham-asmi Kassapā,” ti<br />
“It is I, Kassapa,”<br />
Bhagavā vehāsaṁ abbhuggantvā, nāvāya paccuṭṭhāsi.<br />
and after rising up into the sky, he reappeared in the boat.<br />
Atha kho Uruvelakassapassa jaṭilassa etad-ahosi:<br />
<strong>The</strong>n this occurred to the yogi Uruvelakassapa:<br />
“Mahiddhiko kho Mahāsamaṇo mahānubhāvo,<br />
“Powerful and majestic is this <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic,<br />
yatra hi nāma udakaṁ pi na pavāhissati,<br />
since even the water cannot carry him away,<br />
na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.”-ti<br />
but he is surely not a Worthy One like I am.”<br />

Atha kho Bhagavato etad-ahosi:<br />
<strong>The</strong>n this occurred to the Gracious One:<br />
“Ciraṁ pi kho imassa moghapurisassa evaṁ bhavissati:<br />
“For a long time this will occur to that foolish fellow:<br />
‘Mahiddhiko kho Mahāsamaṇo mahānubhāvo,<br />
‘Powerful and majestic is this <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic,<br />
na tveva ca kho Arahā yathā ahan.’-ti<br />
but he is surely not a Worthy One like I am.’
