Atha kho Bhagavā Rājānaṁ Māgadhaṁ Seniyaṁ Bimbisāraṁ<br />
o <strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, after instructing, rousing,<br />
Dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā,<br />
enthusing, and cheering the Magadhan King Seniya Bimbisāra with a Dhamma talk,<br />
uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi.<br />
having risen from his seat, went away.<br />
Atha kho Bhagavā etasmiṁ nidāne,<br />
<strong>The</strong>n the Gracious One, with this as the basis,<br />
Dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi:<br />
after giving a Dhamma talk, addressed the monks, (saying):<br />
“Anujānāmi bhikkhave ārāman.”-ti<br />
“I allow, monks, a park.”<br />

Tena kho pana samayena Sañjayo paribbājako Rājagahe paṭivasati<br />
<strong>The</strong>n at that time the wanderer Sañjaya 208 was living near Rājagaha<br />
mahatiyā paribbājakaparisāya saddhiṁ,<br />
together with a great assembly of wanderers,<br />
aḍḍhateyyehi paribbājakasatehi.<br />

Tena kho pana samayena Sāriputta-Moggallānā<br />
<strong>The</strong>n at that time Sāriputta and Moggallāna<br />
Sañjaye paribbājake brahmacariyaṁ caranti,<br />
were living the spiritual life under the wanderer Sañjaya,<br />
207 Jā Nid: tasmiṁ ārāmapaṭiggahaṇe “Buddhasāsanassa mūlāni otiṇṇānī” ti Mahāpathavī<br />
kampi. Jambudīpasmiñ-hi ṭhapetvā Veḷuvanaṁ aññaṁ Mahāpathaviṁ kampetvā<br />
gahitasenāsanaṁ nāma natthi; with the acceptance of that park, (knowing): “the roots of the<br />
Buddha’s Dispensation have taken hold,” the great Earth shook. In the Land of the Rose<br />
Apples, apart from the Bamboo Wood, the great Earth never shook on the acceptance of a<br />
dwelling place.<br />

Lord Buddha’s time, who taught a radical scepticism.
