III. <strong>The</strong> Miracles at Uruvelā - 121<br />

Atha kho Uruvelakassapo jaṭilo, tassā rattiyā accayena,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n the yogi Uruvelakassapa, with the passing of that night,<br />

yena Bhagavā tenupasaṅkami,<br />

approached the Gracious One,<br />

upasaṅkamitvā Bhagavantaṁ etad-avoca:<br />

and after approaching, he said this to the Gracious One:<br />

“Kālo Mahāsamaṇa niṭṭhitaṁ bhattaṁ.<br />

“It is time, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, the meal is ready.<br />

Kiṁ nu kho Mahāsamaṇa hiyyo nāgamāsi, api ca mayaṁ taṁ sarāma:<br />

Why did you not come yesterday, <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic, we remembered you, (thinking):<br />

‘Kiṁ nu kho Mahāsamaṇo nāgacchatī’ ti<br />

‘Why does the <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic not come<br />

Khādanīyassa ca bhojanīyassa ca te paṭiviso ṭhapito.” ti<br />

A portion of the food and drinks was set aside for you.”<br />

“Nanu te Kassapa etad-ahosi:<br />

“Didn’t this occur to you, Kassapa:<br />

‘Etarahi kho me mahāyañño paccupaṭṭhito,<br />

‘Now I have arranged for a great sacrifice,<br />

kevalakappā ca Aṅgamagadhā,<br />

and almost the whole (population) of Aṅga and Magadha,<br />

pahūtaṁ khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyaṁ ādāya, abhikkamissanti.<br />

having gathered abundant food and drinks, will attend.<br />

Sace Mahāsamaṇo mahājanakāye iddhipāṭihāriyaṁ karissati<br />

If the <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic performs a powerful miracle in the midst of the people<br />

Mahāsamaṇassa lābhasakkāro abhivaḍḍhissati,<br />

his gain and honour will increase,<br />

mama lābhasakkāro parihāyissati.<br />

and my gain and honour will decrease.<br />

Aho nūna Mahāsamaṇo svātanāya nāgaccheyyā’ ti<br />

Surely the <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic should not come on the morrow’<br />

So kho ahaṁ Kassapa tava cetasā cetoparivitakkam-aññāya,<br />

<strong>The</strong>n I, Kassapa, knowing with my mind the reflection that had arisen in your mind,
