“Āgato kho Mahāsamaṇo Māgadhānaṁ Giribbajaṁ<br />

“<strong>The</strong> <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic has come to Giribbaja 222 in Magadha<br />

Sabbe Sañjaye netvāna, kaṁ su dāni nayissatī” ti<br />

After leading off all those under Sañjaya, who will he lead off now”<br />

Assosuṁ kho bhikkhū tesaṁ manussānaṁ<br />

<strong>The</strong> monks heard those people<br />

ujjhāyantānaṁ khīyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ.<br />

grumbling, moaning, cursing.<br />

Atha kho te bhikkhū Bhagavato etam-atthaṁ ārocesuṁ.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n those monks informed the Gracious One of it.<br />

“Na bhikkhave so saddo ciraṁ bhavissati, sattāham-eva bhavissati,<br />

“This noise will not last long, monks, it will last for only seven days,<br />

sattāhassa accayena antaradhāyissati.<br />

and with the passing of seven days it will disappear.<br />

Tena hi bhikkhave ye tumhe imāya gāthāya codenti:<br />

<strong>The</strong>refore, monks, whoever scolds you with this verse:<br />

‘Āgato kho Mahāsamaṇo Māgadhānaṁ Giribbajaṁ<br />

‘<strong>The</strong> <strong>Great</strong> Ascetic has come to Giribbaja in Magadha<br />

Sabbe Sañjaye netvāna, kaṁ su dāni nayissatī’ ti<br />

After leading off all those under Sañjaya, who will he lead off now’<br />

te tumhe imāya gāthāya paṭicodetha:<br />

you scold them back with this verse:<br />

‘Nayanti ve Mahāvīrā Saddhammena Tathāgatā,<br />

‘<strong>The</strong> <strong>Great</strong> Heros, the Realised Ones, lead with the True Dhamma,<br />

Dhammena nayamānānaṁ, kā usuyyā vijānatan.’ ”-ti<br />

By the Dhamma 223 they are leading, why be jealous of the wise’ ”<br />

223 <strong>The</strong> commentary has an interesting note here explaining that this word can be taken as<br />

having locative, genitive, or instrumental sense, giving the meanings: in the Dhamma, for the<br />

Dhamma, or by the Dhamma; however the form is an instrumental and I translate it as such.
