4. Design Studio: In order to devise<br />
the design strategy with a complete<br />
re-orientation <strong>of</strong> the products<br />
manufactured by the Handloom<br />
sector to suit the international market,<br />
HEPC has set up a Design Studio at<br />
Kannur in Kerala during November<br />
2008 and at Hyderabad in Andhra<br />
Pradesh during September 2010 with<br />
MAI Assistance.<br />
5. Publications: C<strong>of</strong>fee Table Book –<br />
The Empowered Committee <strong>of</strong> MAI<br />
Scheme has approved the proposal<br />
<strong>of</strong> HEPC for publishing 2000 copies<br />
<strong>of</strong> C<strong>of</strong>fee Table Book on Handwoven<br />
<strong>textiles</strong> and a sum <strong>of</strong> Rs. 50.00<br />
lakhs has been sanctioned, ensuring<br />
display <strong>of</strong> information about the<br />
Council and Indian manufacturers/<br />
exporters <strong>of</strong> the products, for sourcing<br />
by foreign buyers. This book is aimed<br />
at highlighting the rich heritage and<br />
diverse product ranged <strong>of</strong> Handwoven<br />
<strong>textiles</strong> and the socio-economic<br />
importance <strong>of</strong> Indian handloom<br />
<strong>industry</strong>to create a global brand and<br />
strategically position Hand-woven<br />
textile items. This publication is likely<br />
to be completed by March, 2012.<br />
Setting up <strong>of</strong> Design Studio<br />
In order to cover the following activities<br />
and services, Design Studios at Kannur<br />
and Hyderabad have already been<br />
commissioned. They provide the following<br />

Adapting and modifying designs<br />
from sketches or fabrics submitted<br />
by client, to meet a price or other<br />
consideration.<br />

To forecast the change in motif, colour<br />
etc.<br />
Create new designs based on the<br />
analysis and forecasting for the<br />
manufacturers<br />
To provide latest in technology by<br />

The outlay for each Studio is Rs.66.00<br />
lakh, <strong>of</strong> which MAI assistance has<br />
been Rs.45.00 lakh.<br />
Handloom Export Zone (HEZ)<br />
In order to create a supply hub for the<br />
manufacture <strong>of</strong> identified export products<br />
, HEPC has conceived a novel project<br />
<strong>of</strong> its kind with a market linkage known<br />
as “Handloom Export Zone”, which<br />
is currently under implementation at<br />
various handloom clusters at Nagercoil,<br />
Kancheepuram district, Thiruvannamalai,<br />
Virudhunagar and Thiruvalluvar district<br />
in Tamilnadu to meet out the following<br />
objectives:<br />

create a supply hub for manufacturing<br />
identified export products ( focus<br />
product)<br />
Provide quality products by imparting<br />
training on quality aspects and by<br />
supplying accessories for quality<br />
control<br />
Increase the wage earning capacity <strong>of</strong><br />
weavers by increasing productivity by<br />
way <strong>of</strong> loom , pre loom up gradation<br />
Improve the work environment by<br />
providing basic amenities like toilet,<br />
water facilities etc.,<br />
Establishing market linkage with<br />
merchant exporters<br />
The project has been implemented<br />
in Kanya Kumari Distt. <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu<br />
financial assistance from Asian<br />
Development Bank. The project has<br />
enhanced livelihood <strong>of</strong> 300 handloom<br />
weavers in 8 WCSs.<br />
