For strategic and harmonized growth <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>textiles</strong> & clothing <strong>industry</strong> in this region,<br />

an Expert Consultancy Committee (ECC)<br />

for North-East region has been constituted<br />

by the Regional Office <strong>of</strong> the Textile<br />

Commissioner, Kolkata having senior<br />

government <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> all states <strong>of</strong> North-<br />

East Region as well as technical experts<br />

and entrepreneurs.<br />

Looking to the response <strong>of</strong> the<br />

entrepreneurs <strong>of</strong> this region and to cater<br />

to the needs <strong>of</strong> the human resources and<br />

testing <strong>of</strong> <strong>textiles</strong>, the Government <strong>of</strong> India<br />

has decided to open a new Powerloom<br />

Service Centre (PSC) at Imphal, Manipur<br />

for which an amount <strong>of</strong> Rs. 94.47 lakh has<br />

been approved for purchasing machines<br />

and equipments etc. This PSC will be<br />

under the administrative control <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Government <strong>of</strong> Manipur.<br />

WOOL<br />

Various projects sanctioned by the Central<br />

Wool Development Board(CWDB) in the<br />

North Eastern Region are given at table<br />

16.15.<br />

JUTE<br />

The Jute Industry occupies an important<br />

place in the national economy. It is one <strong>of</strong><br />

the major industries in the Eastern region,<br />

particularly in West Bengal. It supports<br />

nearly 4 million farm families, besides<br />

providing direct employment to about 2.6<br />

lakh industrial workers and livelihood to<br />

another 1.4 lakh people in the tertiary and<br />

allied sectors. Jute Technology Mission<br />

is under implementation in North Eastern<br />

Region to provide the much needed<br />

thrust and incentive to the jute <strong>industry</strong><br />

to invest in modernization on a significant<br />

scale. The progress <strong>of</strong> different schemes<br />

under implementation in North East is as<br />

follows:<br />

Scheme for Acquisition <strong>of</strong> Machinery and<br />

Plant (Capital subsidy component @ 20%)<br />
