(West Bengal). Since its inception, IJIRA<br />

has, over the years, grown into a world<br />

class research institute on jute.<br />

Major Areas <strong>of</strong> Research are:<br />

(a) Development <strong>of</strong> an eco-friendly<br />

substitute <strong>of</strong> JBO for jute processing.<br />

(b) Light fast bleached & dyed jute<br />

product development.<br />

(c) Jute Bamboo composites.<br />

(d) Development <strong>of</strong> Technical <strong>Textiles</strong><br />

such as wider braided jute fabric.<br />

(e) Jute-Ramie blended finer yarns and<br />

fabric development.<br />

(f) Energy efficient green sizing<br />

technology for jute yarns.<br />

(g) Development <strong>of</strong> Aroma based home<br />

<strong>textiles</strong>.<br />

(h) Multifunctional ceramic based nan<strong>of</strong>inishing<br />

outdoor <strong>textiles</strong> by sol-gelmethods.<br />

(i) Development <strong>of</strong> Low Cost Jute Bags<br />

for Foodgrains and Sugar.<br />

(j) Quality Assurance for food grade jute<br />

products.<br />

In additional to rendering various technical<br />

services to Jute Sector, IJIRA is presently<br />

involved in Jute Technology Mission<br />

Projects DDS 7.1 and DDS 6.4 projects,<br />

promotion and techno-marketing <strong>of</strong> jute<br />

geo-<strong>textiles</strong> in association with National<br />

Jute Board, quality assurance <strong>of</strong> food<br />

grade jute products and consultancy.<br />

WOOL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION,<br />

THANE<br />

Wool Research Association (WRA)<br />

was established in October 1963 under<br />

the Societies Registration Act 1860,<br />

as an Institution with the conception <strong>of</strong><br />

Research & Development in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>wool</strong> technology, initially in the premises<br />

<strong>of</strong> VJTI, Mumbai, as a cooperative joint<br />

venture <strong>of</strong> Indian Woollen Industry and<br />

CSIR, Govt. <strong>of</strong> India. In its infancy, it<br />

started with a testing laboratory and an<br />

education curriculum leading to Diploma<br />

in <strong>Textiles</strong> (<strong>wool</strong>)<br />

Presently, the activities <strong>of</strong> Wool Research<br />

Association are manifold, situated in its<br />

own premises in a sprawling green belt<br />

<strong>of</strong> 13 acres <strong>of</strong> land near Thane, in the<br />

outskirts <strong>of</strong> Greater Mumbai and attached<br />

to <strong>Ministry</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Textiles</strong>, Govt. <strong>of</strong> India as a<br />

body <strong>of</strong> Textile Research Association.<br />

Objects<br />

As per the Memorandum <strong>of</strong> Articles, the<br />

main objects <strong>of</strong> WRA are as follows :<br />

a) To establish a Research Institute for<br />

Wool Industry to undertake scientific<br />

work connected with all aspects <strong>wool</strong><br />

and its technology <strong>of</strong> processing,<br />

either alone or in combination with<br />

other fibres, including man-made<br />

fibres.<br />

b) To undertake Research projects<br />

<strong>of</strong> fundamental & applied nature,<br />

including for improvement /<br />

development <strong>of</strong> new materials,<br />

testing, machinery, processing and<br />

products <strong>of</strong> <strong>wool</strong> and allied textile<br />

<strong>industry</strong>, with a view to securing<br />

greater efficiency, rationalization and<br />

reduction <strong>of</strong> costs.<br />

c) To render technical services to<br />

<strong>industry</strong>, governmental and nongovernmental<br />

agencies including<br />

training & HRD, testing and<br />

certification survey and evaluation<br />

reports.<br />

The Wool Research Association is<br />

involved in the following major activities:<br />

- Basic and Applied Research / Projects<br />

in Wool Related Technology;<br />
